Starting Up
After many years of employment I felt the need to reduce the number of people who can order me around. I managed to get it down to two: my wife and my daughter.
In other words, I founded my own company, going pro with my tools, consulting skills and this website. To make that work I had to leave sepago, where I spent six and a half great and very productive years. In those years we developed a profile management product that was later sold to Citrix and has been available to most XenApp and XenDesktop customers free of charge for several years now. Its name: Citrix Profile Management.
But that was not the first widely used software I developed. 10 years ago I started to work on SetACL, a command-line permission management tool that has been downloaded nearly 500,000 times as of today. “If half a million people download a slightly complex tool for such an unfriendly work environment as the command line how many more would be interested in a nice and friendly, but just as powerful graphical cousin?” Thoughts like that one started me off on the development of SetACL Studio which I released only a month ago.
With these and more free tools and a technical blog with original content I plan to lure enough people to my site to make my commercial tools a success. I will continue to offer high-quality free content, both in the form of tools and as blog articles. I am very happy that these community efforts have been recognized by Citrix, who awarded me the title CTP in 2009, and Microsoft, who made me a brand-new MVP.

Congratulations, wish you the best!
I’ve transitioned some times from employed to self-employed and while the security of a salary is comfortable, there is always the itch of doing “great stuff” on your own but with the risks that it takes.
Well done Helge! I am a fan of your work and a enjoy reading your articles. As a contractor I will keep an eye on the tools your develop, free or otherwise, and will look for the best fit for the companies I migrate through.
Best of luck
Thank you very much!
